Real wood murphy beds are our most popular product. They carry the quality and style that only real wood brings and match our customers' needs. We are one of the largest, if not the largest, real wood murphy bed manufactures in the United States. As a manufacturer we are able to offer our real wood murphy beds at pricing that others charge for melamine murphy beds.

Melamine

Because Melamine comes to us at a low cost and already with a color and texture (texture depends on color) it eliminates the need for finishing and labor when compared to real wood. Melamine Murphy beds are normally used in rooms that do not sit next to wood furniture and it has great durability for kid play rooms.

REAL WOOD

We offer two types of wood materials with our products:

Maple wood example

Maple

Maple is mainly used for furniture, paneling and mill work, kitchen cabinets, moldings, doors, musical instruments, and turnings. It can also be substituted for Cherry and Birch wood. Maple has a white and light tannish brown heartwood, with darker colored pith flecks. The wood is generally straight-grained with a fine uniform smooth texture. The wood of Maple trees is heavy, hard and strong. It has very good bending properties, with good crushing strength and shock resistance.

Red oak wood example

Red Oak

The Latin name for oak, Quercus, means "a fine tree." Oak wood have been key in America's industrial transformation: railroad ties, wheels, plows, looms, barrels and, of course, furniture and floors. The sapwood of red oak is white to light brown and the heartwood is a pinkish reddish brown. The wood is similar in general appearance to white oak, but with a slightly less pronounced figure due to the smaller rays. The wood is mostly straight-grained, with a coarse texture. The wood is hard and heavy, with medium bending strength and stiffness and high crushing strength. 

COMMON QUESTION: WHAT IS THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE BETWEEN OAK AND MAPLE?

Both woods are considered Hard Woods, so both are equally as strong as the other. The real difference is in the texture and appearance due to the grain. Maple is a smoother wood and will carry less grain appearance than Oak. Where Oak has more of a texture due to its grain, which makes the grain more visible. Customer typically choose the wood type that works for the style they are looking for OR that matches along with the wood used in other furniture in their room. MAPLE PAINT FINISHES

The most common material to be painted is maple wood. When you paint maple wood, you have a smooth and a no grain texture that really gives a modern look. As shown below, the paints will not show grain and will be smooth to the touch. We also offer priming only to customers who want their beds ready to paint when they receive it.

MAPLE WEATHERING FINISHES

Bedder Way is proud to introduce our Weathered Finishes. We not only strive to keep up with today's design trends but also to provide our customers with as many options as possible to fit the look they are wanting in their room. Below you will find three NEW finishes that you can get on either Oak or Maple Wood, and on any real wood face design we offer (Melamine is not an option).

UNFINISHED

We understand that we may not offer the paint color or stain color that you need to have the bed finished. You may want to put your own personal artistic touch to the finish. For these type of reasons we allow you to choose to have your murphy bed and any accompanying cabinetry unfinished.

A few tips to remember when you finish the bed:

  • MAKE SURE TO FINISH ALL PIECES BEFORE ASSEMBLING YOUR MURPHY BED - this allows for you to reach all areas.
  • If you are staining, make sure you lightly sand the bed before applying the stain. This will allow the grain to be more open to accept the stain.
  • If you are painting, make sure you apply a primer to the bare wood first. After priming, scuff the surface so that it is smooth and then apply your paint.
  • If you are trying to paint over an already finished surface; Scuff surface, apply primer, scuff until smooth, then apply your paint. Do not just apply paint to a lacquered surface, it needs a primer to bond to.
  • It's a good idea to tape up all handles and hardware (or remove them) before applying your finish.
  • Unfinished wood brings out the color in the wood. PLEASE NOTE: the color will vary across the bed project due to lighter and darker areas of the wood. (both Oak and Maple Wood). If you are looking for a consistent color, we recommend against an unfinished project. If you have any questions about ordering an unfinished project, please ask us before ordering.
